What if you create an isolated utopia?

Tomorrowland

In this film, a group of the world’s top minds and visionary geniuses including famous historical figures like Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Gustave Eiffel, and Jules Verne created a place where the greatest minds could come together to develop advanced technology and push the boundaries of science, without the limitations and conflicts of the regular world.

The vision for a flawless future hits some roadblocks. The main problem? Human nature and the inherent challenges of maintaining a perfect society. Tomorrowland’s leaders become more isolated and controlling, trying to protect their utopia from the outside world’s problems. Instead of solving Earth’s issues, they just ignored them. Plus, a powerful machine, which was supposed to foresee and prevent global catastrophes, ends up broadcasting a negative future to Earth, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom and gloom.

Instead of creating one, maybe look around

Louis Armstrong, with his song “What a Wonderful World” paints a picture of a world filled with simple joys—trees of green, red roses, blue skies, and the warm embrace of loved ones. His lyrics remind us that, despite its flaws, our world already holds moments of utopia. It’s about finding wonder in the present and cherishing the beauty that surrounds us.

“The world is built with blood and genocide” – Bo Burnham

The Musical comedian, Bo Burnham, has shared some opposite views in his Netflix special, “Inside”. He talks a lot about the cynical side of how our world functions and at one point even calls out the people with the general belief of looking good in things with the sarcastic lyrics, “…that’s the key to happiness, ofcourse not for the people that are actually sad and suffering, but for us who gotta f*cking deal with them all the time”.

So the question is, is it immoral to believe the world is a utopia when there’s so much suffering?

Dystopias inspired by the current dystopian qualities in the world

From Bo Burnham’s dystopian view of the current world, you can start to predict the ways that things can go wrong, socially, technologically, and politically. The TV show, “Black mirror” dives deep into it all, and in each episode shows a dystopian scenario of the world that actually does contain a lot of the negative qualities of todays world, making it even more believable.
